Our notes

SumUp's MTD for Income Tax tool works inside the SumUp dashboard and is built on embedded Sage accounting technology. It is aimed at sole traders who already take payments or bank with SumUp.

Pros

  • Described as 'Free for MTD for Income Tax' with no subscription
  • SumUp Business Account not required; other banks via CSV import
  • SumUp payments, invoices and expenses feed in automatically

Cons

  • Tax return (final declaration) filing through SumUp not confirmed on the MTD page
  • UK and foreign property 'Not included' on HMRC listing
  • MTD page still describes the tool as being built ('SumUp''s building a free, simple way')

Really free?

Quarterly updates free
yes ('Submit income tax self-assessment updates in just a few taps'; 'Free for MTD for Income Tax')
Tax return (final declaration) free

None (FAQ: 'you can import a CSV file with the transactions from your bank'); submissions are made from a SumUp dashboard, so a SumUp account is needed
